Sara and Ryan’s wedding at St Etheldreda’s church with a reception in The Crypt.

Sara and Ryan wedding was on 15th April 2023 at 4.15pm, a year after their engagement.  Sara arrived at Ely place in a white taxi and with a massive smile,  she chose The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba by Handel as her entrance music which was followed by a welcome by Father Tom Thomas IC. The choir sung Ave Verum Corpus by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, anyone who has been to a wedding at St Etheldreda’s will know how amazing the choir are and how music is a big part of the ceremony. The recessional was A Midsummer Night’s Dream by Mendelssohn.

After the ceremony the couple and their guests made their way down into The Crypt under the church for the reception.

Oldest Catholic church in England

St Etheldreda’s is my favourite London Church, located on Ely Place next to Hatton Gardens and with an amazing history.

St Etheldreda’s church was the town chapel of the Bishops of Ely from 1250 to 1570. It was the first church to be restored to the Catholic faith after the Reformation and is the oldest Catholic church in England and one of only two remaining buildings in London from the reign of Edward I.

Princess Etheldreda was born in 630, she wanted to be a nun but agreed to a political marriage, she later fled to Ely in Cambridgeshire, where as well as founding a religious community, she also built a magnificent church. After her death devotion to her rapidly spread.
St Etheldreda’s Church was built in 1290 by John De Kirkeby, Bishop of Ely. The whole estate was administered to the See of Ely and outside the jurisdiction of the City of London and therefore had the address of Ely Place, Cambridgeshire, London. in 1531 Henry VIII and his wife Catherine of Aragon attended a lavish feast which lasted for five days. Now the Crypt is very popular for wedding receptions.
